Third Sunday of Advent
We prepare for different things in different ways. Our preparation to play a football match or a session of Bingo is different from our preparation to attend a concert or a date or a wedding or a family gathering.
Likewise, our preparation to receive someone depends on who that someone is. For instance, the preparation to receive a newborn baby is different from the preparation to receive a government official or the taxperson. This means that, to prepare properly, knowing what and/or who we are preparing for is very important.
This Sunday’s readings remind us of this. While in prison, John the Baptist sends his disciples to ask Christ ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?’ (Mt 11, 3). The Second Reading from the Epistle of Hames gives us an example of ‘how’ to prepare: “be patient […] Do not grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, … […]” (Jas 5, 8-9)
Knowing that we await the saviour of the world at Christmas, we can happily pray by making use of the word from the responsorial Psalm and say ‘Come, Lord and save use’
