Fr G’s Letter to  Parents  

Dear Parents,

Last week a letter was addressed to our young[er] parishioners, your children. This week, I thought to direct a few words to you. 

​

Thank you very much for the gift of your children, and for sharing the faith with them. 

​

As we read in this Sunday’s Gospel from Matthew 13;44-52, “[…], the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls, who, on finding one pearl of great value, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” Being a follower of Christ is precious like a pearl of great value, and may you seek to pass this on to your children.

As the Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us in paragraphs 2222-2223, “Parents must regard their children as children of God […]. Showing themselves obedient to the will of the Father in heaven, they educate their children to fulfil God’s law.” Do not forget that YOU the parents “have the first responsibility for the education of your children. You bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity and disinterested service are the rule […].

The schools and clergy are here to support you in your role as primary educators of your children. We are here to support and accompany, but not replace you in that role. You have received this wonderful role from God, and we pray that you receive the graces to carry it out faithfully. 

​

Your children are on holiday now. As you spend time with them, help them grow in the faith. Pray daily with them, read the Bible together, listen to them. Visit the church during the day to pray quietly. Introduce them to Eucharistic Adoration by coming to church for it during the week. 

​

A little challenge you could take up this summer break is to keep the phone away (both parents & children) as much as possible and enjoy face-to-face time with your children. Please bring them to church every Sunday for Mass; and if you are away on holiday, please include a visit to a church, especially on Sundays. Teach them about God’s love for them. Please remember that the church is rendered more beautiful and livelier with your children actively involved in it. Our parish is blessed to have you and your children.
